About the Origin of the piece:
Agustin Barrios Mangore lived the last few years of his life in the city
of San Salvador, El Salvador, surrounded by friends and pupils.
One evening whilst teaching, an old lady knocked on the door to beg for
an alm (limosna). Her exact pleading words were: 'UNA LIMOSNITA POR EL
AMOR DE DIOS'. After the class, the knocks on the door inspired the
tremolo masterpiece. The knocks are apparant in the first two bars of
the piece and they resound throughout the entire work beneath the
beautiful yet desparate melody. This was to be Agustin's last composition
for he died a month later.
